Library

Every class at Park School (preschool through fifth grade) enjoys a weekly library class. The library time is 30 minutes per class (shorter for preschool). Library time includes reading and discussion time as well as time for the students to select and check out books. Children in TK through 2nd Grades are allowed to check out one book each week while 3rd through 5th Graders may check out two books. Library discussion topics include use of the library (i.e. finding books proficiently), character trait of the month, relevant holidays, seasonal and current news topics, and a monthly class on animal science.

Second Look Books

Second Look Books is a beloved annual event at Park School which is celebrated at the end of Literacy Month (February). All through the school year, gently used books are collected in the library to be distributed to students during Second Look Book week. The books are donated by Park families, teachers, and the community. Students are able to select one or two books (depending on the number of donations) to keep. This exciting event is highly anticipated each year and promotes reading and making books accessible to all students.

The Jan Hammerstrom Memorial Fund

Dr. Gary Hammerstrom established the Jan Hammerstrom Memorial Fund to honor Jan’s many years of service as a Park School Kindergarten teacher and to celebrate her love of children’s literature.  The Jan Hammerstrom Memorial Fund enhances the educational experience of every Park School student by providing books for the library at San Mateo Park School year after year.

San Mateo Park School is forever thankful to Dr. and Mrs. Hammerstrom.

Scholastic Book Fair

With help from the PTA, we sponsor one Scholastic Book Fair each school year. It is highly anticipated by students of all grade levels. There is something for everyone! Profits from the Book Fair supports the purchase of new books for the Park School Library.
